The amino acid 5-HTP, an abbreviation for 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HYDROXY-TRYPTOPHANE), is the hydroxylated form of the amino acid tryptophan, found in foods of high protein composition such as meat and dairy products. 5-HTP acts as an intermediate metabolite between the amino acid L-Tryptophan (Tryptophan) and the neurotransmitter Serotonin (Serotonin). Tryptophan is converted to 5-HTP, which in turn is converted to serotonin. Serotonin plays an important role in many organic functions such as appetite control, mood stability, and sleep.
