The human body requires a wide variety of food substances called "nutrients" to perform at its maximum potential. These nutrients are the building materials for new and repairing tissues and they are the constituents of the bones, teeth, soft tissue, muscles, blood, and nerve cells.
Each nutrient has specific functions but in many instances, several nutrients must work in tandem to help the body perform the necessary task. Vitamins and minerals are the nutrients which work together and are constituents of the body's enzyme systems.
Vitamins and minerals are the catalysts necessary for the maintenance of life and are important in the production of hormones. To ensure optimum nutrient intake, for many individuals it is important to consider supplementing the daily diet with a multivitamin/multimineral formula. Multivitamin and multimineral formulations providing more than vitamins A and D had started to be available in the market from the mid 1930s. Multivitamin is a formulation intended to enhance a human diet with vitamins, dietary minerals and other nutritional rudiments.
These multivitamins are available in the form of tablets, capsules, powders, liquids and injectables. Multivitamins are accepted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the United Nations' authority on food standards, as a category of food. Multivitamin supplements are normally formulated in amalgamation with minerals.
The multivitamin product is defined as a supplement having three or more vitamins and minerals, not including herbs, hormones, or drugs, and where each vitamin or mineral is integrated at a dose well below the acceptable upper level, and not having adverse health effects as determined by the Food and Drug Board.
